While researching healthy restaurants in the Newport area, I randomly came across Salvation Cafe. Despite many trips to the Newport area, I had never seen or heard of the cafe.

The location on Broadway Street instead of the more popular and congested Thames Street could explain the missed opportunity. I was delighted with the cozy atmosphere, healthy menu options, and quiet atmosphere at this cafe.

Food

Brunch was excellent. I also appreciated the ability to specialty order the breakfast burritos vegetarian or vegan (not many restaurants give you this option).

The burrito was a delicious combination of black beans, onion, and potatoes wrapped in a whole grain tortilla. Salsa was served on the side, along with a green salad and roasted potatoes. We both opted to replace the meat with avocado, which made for a tasty substitution.

We both agreed that the food was excellent. Other brunch items include: omelettes, french toast, pancakes, soup and salad, and various sandwiches. The breakfast menu is available either a la carte or prix fixe with coffee or tea or Mimosa or Bloody Mary drinks. Brunch is served from 11:00am-2:00pm every Sunday.

Dinner runs nightly from 5:00pm-11:00pm. On the menu, you will find salads, various appetizers such as oysters and mussels, and plenty of seafood entrees. There is even a Vegan Risotto on the menu for those following this diet, which is often tough to accommodate at restaurants.

Service

Our waiter was great. He came over as soon as we were seated, was friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. There was a small mistake with the bill that the waiter fixed immediately.

Atmosphere

The dining room is very cozy with a woodsy, log cabin type feel. The fireplace and lights added a festive air to the holiday season. Although small, the restaurant felt bigger because of the high ceilings. Also, the tables were not crammed together like some of the other restaurants in the area.

Final Remarks

Salvation Cafe is a great choice for Sunday Brunch. The food was excellent, prices were affordable, service was great, and the cozy dining room made for a romantic setting. I would definitely visit Salvation Cafe again on any future visit to Newport. One of the best restaurants I have tried out in the area, and definitely the most accommodating in terms of dietary restrictions.
